Kandy Perahera

Two weeks before August full moon Kandyans prepare for the celebrations of the Kandy Esala Perahera, a huge procession to worship the Buddha and to honour the sacred tooth relic which lies enshrined in the Dalada Maligawa throughout the year. It runs for 10 days starting at the new moon of Esala when the branches of the tree Cassia fistula are brought to the four patron gods of the island called Natha, Vishnu, Kataragama and Pattini. As the days pass by the processions become bigger and more pompous with the glorious peak on the last five days of the Perahera when the so called Dalada group with the most honoured elephant of the procession which carries the tooth relic parade through the streets of the temple district. An abundance of Kandyan dancers, drummers beating drums and cracking whips as well as singers and flute players accompany the procession. The numerous elephants appear in various shimmery and sparkling costumes outreaching one another in beauty and radiance. The last procession in the full moon night leads to the Adahana Maluwa Gedige Vihara for a presentation of the holy tooth relic to remind of times when it was hidden in this temple.
